About Tourism in Xinjiang

The Ultimate Guide to Low-Budget Travel in Xinjiang

Why Xinjiang

“ Magnificent landscapes, vibrant cultures – Xinjiang is a splendid place, well worth a visit. ”

Xinjiang: a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Here, the Tianshan glaciers, Kanas Lake, the Ili grasslands and the Taklamakan Desert weave a breathtakingly magnificent tapestry. Wander through the labyrinthine alleys of Kashgar’s ancient city, listening to the ancient melodies of the Twelve Muqam, and you can feel the vibrant pulse of the multi-ethnic cultures along the Silk Road—the warmth of the Uyghur people, the gallant horses of the Kazakhs, and the eagle flutes of the Tajiks, all composing a profound human symphony.

Do not miss the culinary revelry: the smoky allure of whole roasted lamb, the rich broth of large-plate chicken, and thin-skinned, generously stuffed baked buns, all paired with honey-sweet grapes and Hami melons. Every bite is a concentrated gift from the land. Here, the journey transforms into a feast for the senses: by day, galloping across boundless horizons; by night, intoxicated by the serenity beneath the starry sky. Xinjiang’s magic lies in its ability to etch indelible, vibrant memories upon your soul through its extreme natural beauty, weighty history, and unadulterated warmth.

Kanas

Your Xinjiang Kanas Lake

Lake Kanas lies deep within the Altai Mountains of Xinjiang, acclaimed as a ‘paradise on earth, a garden of the gods’. At an elevation of 1,374 metres, it stands as China’s deepest glacial dammed lake, famed for its mysterious lake monster legends and waters that shift colour with the seasons and light. The scenic area harmoniously blends alpine peaks, forests, lakes and grasslands, featuring core attractions such as Camel Neck Bay, Colour-Changing Lake, Dragon’s Lair Bay and the Fish-Viewing Platform. Visitors may also experience the distinctive folk customs of the Mongolian Tuvan people.

Duku Highway

Stretches from Dushanzi in the north to Kuche in the south, traversing the Tianshan Mountains from north to south. This 561-kilometre “Road of Heroes” encapsulates Xinjiang’s most extreme landscapes: from glacial passes to alpine meadows, traversing all four seasons within a single day. More than a perilous link between northern and southern Xinjiang, it offers a breathtaking journey through sheer cliffs and gorges. Open only during summer months, it is hailed as “China’s most beautiful highway”.
